  • The Toulouse CHU is interested in the psychological impact of the two months of confinement on children aged 8 to 15 years.
  • A questionnaire was developed to determine possible cases of post-traumatic stress following this unprecedented period.
  • Families from Midi-Pyrénées interested in participating in the study, called E-COCCON, can dial 05 34 55 86 73 during the week.

What were the effects of confinement in 8-15 year olds? This is the question that the E-COCCON study, just launched by the Toulouse University Hospital, is proposing to answer, under the leadership of pediatrician Isabelle Claudet. "The children have been cut off from their network of friends and their social networks at large," she says. They can develop certain forms of stress. "

The head of the children's department at the CHU hopes to collect “between 500 and 1,000 testimonies” over this timeless period (and from school) from “targeted” young people but also from their parents. Families from the former Midi-Pyrenees region interested are invited to call 05 34 55 86 73 from Monday to Friday. The questionnaire lasts about twenty minutes. It deals with the habitat, the parents' profession, the age of the children and their weight before and after confinement.

But not only: "we have a grid with criteria to determine if the child shows signs of stress, with also a parental version", details Professor Claudet. Some examples: “Do you have nightmares? »« Do you avoid watching or even talking about programs on the coronavirus? This so-called CRIES grid is an adaptation of a procedure already applied following disasters, in Asian or African countries.

Sleep disorders, addictive behaviors…

Because the unprecedented period of confinement has sometimes led to states comparable to post-traumatic stress. "The risks are sleep or eating disorders, or even addictive behavior for the older ones," warns Professor Claudet. There can also be classic crises, with children who want to break everything. "

Ideally, the specialist hopes to complete the study "within 15 days", so as not to stray too far from the confinement period and therefore not to let the memories that she has sown fly away. “If we do not have enough participants, we will go up to a month at most. If children have a very high form of stress, families may be referred to professionals, such as psychologists, to deal with the problem.

In order to broaden participation and obtain a representative sample of the population, the E-COCCON study is also offered to young CHU patients and their families, at the entrance to the emergency room but also in all of children's hospital.
