TEPCO Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant Exhaust stack cutting work completed in about 9 months April 29, 20:21

The work of cutting the contaminated exhaust stack of the TEPCO Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station 23 times was completed on the 29th, which took about 9 months.

From August last year, TEPCO has been working to dismantle the 120-meter-high stack that was contaminated by the accident between Units 1 and 2 of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant.

The stack was cut into 23 parts, mainly for remote work, and the last block was cut off before 3:00 am on the 29th, and the height was about 60 meters as planned. After this, a lid will be installed on the tip of the exhaust stack to prevent rainwater from entering, and all work will be completed in at least one day.

In the work so far, there were problems such as the blade of the cutting device wearing faster than expected, or being unable to come out, so the work was completed one month later than originally planned.

Eiji Meguro, the chief of the construction company "Able" in Hirono-cho, Fukushima Prefecture, who contracted the work, said, "I had some troubles as I expected, but I think that I finally came here. I can see from outside the nuclear power plant. By not seeing the exhaust stack, I hope that people inside and outside the prefecture will feel that the decommissioning has progressed.By making use of the knowledge and technology acquired in this dismantling work, it will be useful in other decommissioning work I want to be.
