Idris Elba and his wife Sabrina Dhowre Elba have supported the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), which is launching a new financial tool to help rural populations in poor countries cope with the economic consequences of the coronavirus pandemic, announced Fida Monday.

"As long as the epidemic continues locally, it will threaten the entire world population. IFAD must be given more support in its work, which is essential for the functioning of food systems in rural areas, ”said the British actor in a press release.

A fund with an initial amount of $ 40 million

Idris Elba, already involved with the United Nations in the fight against Ebola fever, visited Sierra Leone in December with his wife, actress and model Sabrina Dhowre Elba, also an Fida goodwill ambassador, to bear witness to local agricultural development projects, in particular farmers' banks, supported by this UN agency during the Ebola epidemic.

Idris Elba was born and raised in Great Britain to a Sierra Leonean father and a Ghanaian mother. He obtained Sierra Leonean nationality at the end of 2019. The new Fida fund he supports, with an initial amount of 40 million dollars (around 37 million euros) up to 250 million (around 230 million euros), should help prevent a food crisis from doubling the current health crisis.
