In the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his ex-rival Benny Gantz announced on Monday April 20 the formation of a government of unity and emergency. This agreement puts an end to the longest political crisis in the history of the country.

"An agreement for the formation of a national emergency government has been signed" by Benjamin Netanyahu, head of the Likud, and Benny Gantz, the leader of the Blue-White party, said the formations of the two men in a joint statement.

The unprecedented political deadlock in which Israel finds itself has already been punctuated by three ballots, in April and September 2019, then on March 2.

According to the Israeli press, the two camps had already agreed that Benjamin Netanyahu should be reelected for 18 months at the head of the government, after which Benny Gantz would succeed him.
