The roof of the Atlantis shopping center with the planned addition of solar panels / - Legendre l' énergie

  • In Saint-Herblain, the roof of the shopping center will be fitted with solar panels.
  • The electricity produced will be mainly consumed on site.
  • The works should start this summer for a commissioning in September.

The Atlantis shopping center in Saint-Herblain was already the largest in western France (120 shops). It will also soon have one of the largest French photovoltaic power plants for self-consumption, even if customers will not see anything. On the initiative of the E.Leclerc brand, which owns the hypermarket, the roof of the silo parking lot will in fact be equipped with a little over 5,000 solar panels, spread over 9,000 m2 of surface.

With a power of 1.7 MWp, this installation will produce 1.756 MWh each year, "equivalent to the electrical consumption of 660 homes (excluding heating)", announces Legendre Energie, a company specializing in photovoltaics and responsible for realization of power plant.

A quarter of Leclerc's needs

The energy produced will be mainly consumed (94%) on site by the hypermarket. A “local and sustainable” contribution which should enable it to cover a quarter of its annual needs in the long term and thus “reduce its electricity bill”. The management of E. Leclerc has also set itself the objective of reducing its energy consumption by at least 30% by 2025. The rest of the electricity produced will be sold to the network.

Work was scheduled to start in April but was delayed due to the coronavirus crisis. The project leaders are now counting on a start-up "at the beginning of summer 2020" for commissioning scheduled for September.

Already on the MIN and the Zenith car parks

Legendre Energie had already stood out in the Nantes conurbation for the installation, last year, of two major public projects. First, the 5 MW photovoltaic power plant on the roof of the new National Interest Market (MIN), in Rezé. Then the installation of shade houses (2.5 MW) covering the car parks of the Zénith de Nantes.

Since the adoption of the metropolitan "Sun Plan" in 2015, production from photovoltaics has quadrupled in the Nantes conurbation.
