The track of a “voluntary fire” is privileged as being at the origin of a fire which caused the death of a mother and her three-year-old daughter Wednesday in Montereau-Fault-Yonne (Seine-et-Marne) , said the Fontainebleau prosecution on Friday.

At least two fire starts

"The findings made by the forensic laboratory show at least two starts of fire" and "seem to exclude the electrical malfunction" because the electric cables were not damaged, said Guillaume Lescaux, the prosecutor of Fontainebleau. "For us, it is a voluntary fire" which seems to be at the origin of the drama, he added.

The investigation is continuing to exploit the video surveillance of the premises, take samples and interrogate the neighborhood. It was entrusted to the judicial police of Versailles (Yvelines). The fire started around 6:30 p.m. in an apartment, on the 1st floor of a building with seven, located in the city of Surville.

"Several dozen rescues"

The fire quickly spread to the other floors and the intervention required "several dozen rescues" through the windows, according to the firefighters.

The mother and daughter, residing on the seventh floor, died on the spot despite the intervention of rescue workers in an attempt to resuscitate them. The ten others more lightly injured were "poisoned by smoke," they said.
