Meyer debuted at the Royal Opera in 1952 in the role of Azucena in Verdi's "Trubaduren". The big breakthrough came in 1954 as the title role in a set of "Carmen" directed by Göran Gentele.

Kerstin Meyer was employed by the Royal Opera in 1952–61 and 1969–81. She was also regularly involved with, among others, Deutsche Oper Berlin and The Met in New York. In 1984-94, she was also the principal at the Stockholm University College.

Her last stage performance made Meyer as Madame Armfeldt in Sondheim's "Summer Night Smile" at Malmö opera 2013.

“Her warm, natural voice was a school in her own right and when she later became head of the Opera University she generously shared all her experience and knowledge. For the Royal Opera, she came to mean a great deal when she made the opera internationally known during the 1950s and 1960s by being involved in the major opera houses in, among others, Germany, England, the USA and Italy, "says Royal Opera's director Birgitta Svendén in a comment.
