It mobilizes 500 researchers from 38 countries. An international survey on the loss of smell and taste observed during the disease due to the new coronavirus was launched among patients and former patients by a consortium.

Through a questionnaire, the scientists seek "to determine the frequency of these symptoms during the Covid-19 epidemic and their possible persistence, age and sex of the people concerned," details Professor Jérôme Golebiowski of the Institut de chemistry of Nice (CNRS / Université Côte d'Azur) which coordinates the “France” part of the study.

Monitoring protocol

The researchers have joined together in the Global Consortium for Chemosensory Research (or GCCR for Global Consortium for Chemosensory Research ). The goal is to reach tens of thousands of responses.

Secondly, the idea would be to propose a protocol for monitoring people who still have problems with smell and taste overall after a fortnight. The survey is not intended to establish a diagnosis and does not offer treatment.

Also in the flu

The questionnaire is available on the web for those diagnosed by PCR test, by a doctor or who are convinced to have had these symptoms. It will allow us to explore the nature of these cases of loss of smell (anosmia) and loss of taste (ageusia) among those affected and to compare them with other pathologies.

These states can also occur in influenza even if it seems less frequent, but we do not know their frequency, according to Professor Jérôme Golebiowski.
