I was not shocked before by the extent of my shock with what I discovered this week about the extent of domestic violence. The beginning was in the article of the British newspaper “The Guardian” on the ninth of April 2020, stating that the rate of reporting of domestic violence incidents in Britain has increased by 120% since the Corona crisis, and it took me Search until I reached our Arab homeland, which is not better off than the West. It seems that the journey begins from childhood and continues throughout the stages of life, and sad that many parents do not find a disgrace in the degradation of their children's dignity and lack of respect, but in some cultures in the Arab countries, pampering or talking to the child is despicable. Violence against children, whether sexual, physical or moral, is endless, especially towards girls, such as circumcision, forced marriage, beatings, and moral abuse. Unfortunately, violence may extend to parents, until the son strikes his father and mother.

According to the World Health Organization, a third of the world's women are subjected to violence by a life partner or a relative, and every minute six women are killed by someone close to them! I believe that the percentage is greater in the Arab countries due to honor killings still being committed in some societies, the most recent of which is the incident of the Palestinian young woman, Israa Gharib. Violence does not have to be physical. Rather, violence includes marginalization, contempt, neglect and insulting opinion, and many images that some do not think fall into violence and abuse. In many Arab countries, women or men do not consider that a man’s beating of his wife falls within the violence. Worse, in some countries, there is no legislation to protect women, children or different groups from the scourge of violence.

Statistics indicate that 75% of cases of domestic violence occur in front of children, and 50% occur to them, and it is certain that exposure to family violence in childhood years leaves psychological and emotional effects and scars that are difficult to treat, but may not be treated, including delayed academic achievement, and some disorders After the trauma, such as nightmares, bedwetting, loss of self-confidence, and worse, the child engages in violence, whether with his peers or even after he exudes. In order for societies to get rid of this damned scourge, it is necessary to start with serious awareness that reaches all segments of society, through effective awareness campaigns using advertisements and posters, and to include that issue in school curricula and television programs, and not to display scenes of violence in all forms of artwork, as it should Enact and implement legislation with an iron hand, without any complacency, and create a real physical and psychological shelter for victims of violence.
