A hospital in Lima, the capital of Peru, announced on Tuesday that two women infected with the newborn coronavirus had given birth to two children and that tests had shown that the disease had not been transmitted to the babies.

The Repagliati Hospital added that the birth of the two children on March 27 and 31 was caesarean section as instructed by doctors to avoid any complications.

"Fortunately, no transmission occurred, which means that the infection was not transmitted from the two mothers to the two infants," said Dr. Carlos Albrecic.

He added that the two women are in good health, but they are still receiving treatment for the Coronavirus.

Medics in the Chinese city of Wuhan where the virus originated raised fears in early February of the possible transmission of the virus from mother to fetus, after the birth of at least one child with symptoms of the disease.

But the Lancet journal published in mid-February a study of 9 pregnant women in China, who tested positive for corona virus.

The study concluded that there is no "reliable evidence to date to support the hypothesis of the transmission of Covid-19 infection from mother to child."
