A building struck by a peril order in Marseille. - Adrien Max / 20 Minutes

  • Shahriyar was moved from his apartment, which he owns, in late 2018. Since then, he has been hosted by friends.
  • After a first burglary at the start of the year, his building was again burgled on Sunday during the period of confinement.
  • After more than a year asking the town hall, his trustee and more recently the police, he is exhausted.

“I come face to face with three guys and two girls, really aggressive. There is no more electricity, we are in the dark. They ask me what I am doing there, while I am at home, as if it was I who attacked them. One of the girls became really violent, and a guy had a knife. Blows were exchanged, I remember being punched and kicked in the head. Shahriyar thought he was dying on Sunday, when neighbors had just warned him of a burglary in progress in his apartment in Marseille.

He and his other eight co-owners have been evicted from his apartment on rue Mazenod, in the Joliette district of Marseille, since the end of 2018. Since then, he has been accommodating himself as best he can. “Since we were expelled, I haven't stopped asking my trustee and the Marseille town hall to find out where the work is. With all the other co-owners, we agreed to pay them, but nothing has changed since that date. I had to navigate between different apartments and for the past eight months a friend has agreed to accommodate me, ”says Shahriyar, for whom the relocation is entirely at his expense, as the owner.

Two burglaries in two months

An already complicated situation, which became even darker at the start of the year. “About two months ago the building was broken into. When we were warned I came back, and they had smashed the kitchen to get the built-in dishwasher, they stole the TV, my desktop computer, the slightest cutlery. I had done for 40,000 euros of work to be able to live properly in this apartment, and I could only recover my belongings, ”laments Shahriyar.

He files a complaint, but according to him the police officials were initially reluctant to go and inspect the building, entirely visited by burglars, classified as endangered. "There are two cameras at the exit of the building, I asked them to look, but they refused. They gave me a paper for my insurance, and that's it, ”he says.

"I almost got planted"

Last Sunday, in the middle of confinement, rebelote Shahriyar was warned by his neighbors: a burglary is underway. "They had already informed the police, and I called them back on the way. When I arrive I see that the door is wide open, and I call the police. There, they tell me that they are aware but too busy, I tell them that there is the possibility of getting hold of the burglars, and they hang up on me. I decide to go up to see the damage they have done and once in my apartment, I come face to face with them, ”Shahriyar can't get over it.

He finally manages to extricate himself from this delicate situation and contacts the police again. "I told them that I almost got planted and that they were still inside, and in the end they arrived 10 minutes later but the burglars were gone. I filed a complaint, and we were able to give the police the registrations, ”explains Shahriyar.

2,500 people still in temporary accommodation

On the public security side of Bouches-du-Rhône, it is explained that the building is "under the responsibility of the town hall". “We intervened around 3.30 pm, after having received several calls, indeed. We were informed of the presence of squatters, and when we arrived they were on the run. The investigation is ongoing, registration should make things easier. Whenever we are informed of a burglary in progress, we move. Even in this period where we have to enforce containment, ”said one.

Half a relief for Shahriyar, who felt totally overwhelmed by the situation. “It's been over a year that I have been fighting with the trustee, with the town hall, and now with the police, and so far nothing has changed. Basically this situation only concerns me, but after so many battles I can't take it anymore, ”he admits.
