Change of direction. After announcing on March 23 that it would ban open-air markets, the government relaxed its position on Friday and released a new health protocol during the containment period. A decision that allows the city of Lille to reopen its 19 markets as well as the halls of Wazemmes. The prefect of the North, in fact, gave his approval this Sunday, at the request of Lille.

"The city has always been opposed to this decision of the government, underlines the town hall of Lille, in a press release. Firstly because it is wrongly based on the idea that it is always possible to obtain supplies from supermarkets […] and because the closing of markets is contrary to the model of consumption and food quality that we defend who favors local production and short circuits. "

The Greens had, on Friday, denounced the prefect's decision to ban the Lille markets, saying "less dangerous to go to an outdoor market than in a large area" and expressing their "concerns about this distortion competition at the expense of small local producers ”.

Police checks

In Pas-de-Calais, the prefect also authorized the return of local markets in the 46 municipalities - notably Arras, Calais, Boulogne-sur-Mer or Saint-Omer - which had requested a derogation, specifying that "the forces of the order may be required to carry out checks to ensure compliance with the regulations ”.

Our file on containment

Markets are only authorized for the sole establishment of food businesses and are always prohibited without prefectural derogation.
