The director general of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus , stressed on Monday that those infected with COVID-19 can still infect others after recovering , so their isolation must continue at least two weeks after stop symptoms.

"They can still infect others after they stop feeling bad , so the (isolation) measures should go on for at least two weeks after the symptoms go away," the Ethiopian doctor told a news conference, especially commenting on the situation of those who recover from the disease at home.

Tedros added that in these cases the caregivers must be people who do not belong to risk groups (elderly or people with diseases that could be complicated by COVID-19), they should wash their hands after coming into contact with the patient, and they should not allow any other visit.

"Valiant measures"

Ghebreyesus has thanked the Government of Spain for the "brave" draconian measures taken to stop the COVID-19 pandemic, but urged its citizens to follow the recommendations of the authorities.

"Spain has taken very brave actions, I have conveyed President Pedro Sánchez that his commitment is very strong, but to fight this virus political commitment is not enough, there must be citizen cooperation," said Tedros when asked by the crowds that still today , already declared a state of alarm, continues to exist in areas such as Madrid's public transport.

"It is the cooperation of all citizens that will make this response complete," stressed the Ethiopian doctor, who stressed that all individuals "must protect themselves to protect others."

"Listen to the recommendation of the national authorities, this virus will not be stopped without the cooperation of the entire society, " added the WHO's highest official, who dedicated a "thank you" in Spanish to Spain, in response to the sacrifices that the quarantines will produce in your society.

Tedros also said he was " excited " by the spontaneous applause that in Spain and other countries has occurred in recent days in gratitude to health workers, the front line in the fight against the pandemic.

More tests

"This human solidarity must be more infectious, we can unite in ways we have never seen before, and we can all succeed together ," he said.

In addition, the World Health Organization (WHO) has asked countries to test " coronavirus in every suspected case" , while the number of infections and deaths is increasing.

Currently, "there are more cases and deaths in the rest of the world than in China," where the epidemic emerged in December, WHO director Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told reporters in Geneva.

"You can't put out a fire blindfolded," he warned. The WHO advises countries to "test every suspected case."

Although it did not give new official figures on the pandemic, according to an AFP count based on official sources, there have been more than 169,710 infections in 142 countries. The total number of deaths is 6,640. In Spain there are 9,191 diagnosed cases and 309 deaths.
