Is this a first step towards the end of the fighting in northern Syria? Russia and Turkey agreed on a ceasefire on Thursday, March 5, in the province of Idleb, announced Vladimir Putin and Recep Tayyip Erdogan after an interview of more than six hours in Moscow.

The Turkish president, speaking alongside his Russian counterpart, said the ceasefire would come into effect at midnight on Thursday. He added that the Turkish army reserves the right to respond to any attack by Syrian forces, supported by Russia in their attempt to reconquer the region, the last bastion of rebels hostile to Syrian President Bashar al Assad.

They did not give more details, but their foreign ministers will read a press release within hours.
