In 1999, the nomination “Man of the Year” was replaced by “Man of the Year”, but too often the magazine chose men.

“With the“ 100 Women of the Year ”project, we are trying to draw attention to influential women who were often in the shadows,” the report said.

On the cover for 1920 were suffragists - female rights activists. Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain was recognized as the Woman of the Year in 1952.

In 1976, the honorary title was awarded to Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. And in 1982, Time placed on the cover a photograph of British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.

The woman of the year in 2019 was named activist Greta Tunberg.

In December 2019, Forbes magazine named German Chancellor Angela Merkel the most influential woman in the world.
