Angela Gui writes in a text in the journal Quarterly that one of the most frightening parts of China's handling of Gui Minhai is China's claim that her father should have resigned from his Swedish citizenship and applied to regain his Chinese. That is not true, neither she nor the Foreign Ministry.

- He is a Swedish citizen. A Swedish citizenship can only be terminated after examination and decision by the Migration Board, said Buster Mirow Emitslöf, press contact at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs earlier.

Words must be backed up with action

"I wonder what this non-acceptance without penalties really means?" Writes Angela Gui.

She writes that words must be backed up with action and that China should be held accountable. She therefore proposes that Sweden should continue to discourage travel to China to "inform Swedes that we are not protected from being deprived of liberty and imprisoned on arbitrary grounds".

Angela Gui further writes that "the lack of consequences from the outside world has allowed China to use foreign nationals as tiles in political power games" and asks why the EU is not taking stronger action.

Independent Commission

The moderates' leader Ulf Kristersson has previously said that he does not think the government has handled the issue of Gui Minhai properly and that an independent commission should be appointed.

In a debate article published in DN on Thursday, Erik Halkjaer and Björn Tunbäck from Reporters Without Borders write that they welcome such a commission and that "the violation of Gui Minhai's human rights is obvious". They have previously called on the Riksdag to appoint a commission to investigate the imprisoned journalist Dawit Isaak's case.

The cultural news is looking for Angela Gui.
