• Madrid: Coronavirus focus in a residence: a dead old woman and 9 others infected

The coronavirus has been reprimed with cruise passengers, this time off the coast of California . Those affected are thousands of passengers aboard the Princess Cruise, the same ship in which the first mortal victim registered in the Golden State traveled and made the journey between San Francisco and Mexico a few weeks ago. On Wednesday the death was confirmed, a 71-year-old man residing in Placer County, northwest Sacramento.

In addition, another person from the same county who made the same trip has tested positive for Covid-19. It is in "a very difficult condition" in a hospital, according to local authorities. The ship, which should have returned to San Francisco on Wednesday after a tour of Hawaii, has been held 350 nautical miles offshore with 21 other sick people and waiting for medical tests. At the moment, they have cold symptoms that could be cases of coronavirus.

The first deceased and the increase in the number of infections has led the governor, Gavin Newsom, to declare a state of emergency in California . "I want to clarify that this is not for money," he said. "It's about resources. It's about our ability to add tools to the toolbox."

At the moment, the priority is to locate the 2,500 people who made the cruise along with the two people affected by the coronavirus. Half come from California and another 62 remained on the ship to make the journey to Hawaii. That group remains in quarantine in their cabins to prevent the spread is greater and waiting for them to dock in San Francisco.

"We have the ability to do this," Newsom said of the task of locating passengers from the previous cruise. "By this afternoon, we will have contacted all county health officials who have someone who left this cruise."

The Californian governor has already assured that no one can disembark in San Francisco until those with symptoms of contagion have been examined by medical personnel and get the results. It may be days until they leave the cruise, anchored in international waters and one day from the port of San Francisco.

Complaints from the ship have not been long in coming. Many passengers have expressed their outrage at learning about the situation on board by the news and not through Princess staff. "I found out from CNN, " one of the tourists told the Los Angeles Times.

It is the second Princess company cruise hit by the virus outbreak. A few weeks ago, some 700 people aboard the Diamond Princess were affected by contagion off the coast of Japan. The fear of Covid-19 caused a prolonged quarantine, including 300 Americans who stayed 14 days in a military base before returning home.
