In the stands for several months, the reform of the A2 motorcycle license (maximum power of 35 kW, 47.5 hp) is finally on the road. Led by Emmanuel Barbe, the interministerial delegate for road safety, it will come into force from Monday, March 2 (actually March 1, but it's a Sunday). So much for the theoretical part.

The technical part, it will evolve later in the month of March. This implementation involves a transitional period of six months, until September 1. Beyond that, the new form of examination will apply to everyone.

A specific code and a single stage test

The first change is of size, or rather of form: finished the general theoretical test (ETG). The famous "Code" was the same whether you wanted to pass a car license or a motorcycle license. It is replaced by the theoretical motorcycle test (ETM). The test is always composed of 40 questions, but a dozen of them will now be specific to motorized two-wheelers. This “motorcycle code” in its wake leads to the elimination of “technical checks” before the set, and orally, “12 sheets”, which concluded this same event. According to Thierry Le Pallec, motorcycle manager at the National Union of Independent Driving (UNIC), and who participated in the meetings to prepare the reform, this choice is positive: "The questions just before the technical stage could lead to a big unnecessary stress. "

The technical platform has also been changed. Stroller, slalom, U-turn, braking, passenger ... No revolution, the novelty consists in having to chain all these tests instead of doing them in two phases. "A slight difficulty anyway for the candidates, who will have to remember the whole route by heart", plague Pascal Wolf, animator of the educational commission of the Association for the training of bikers (AFDM). The stage test is therefore shortened, the aim of Road Safety being to favor traffic.

This last test will be lengthened by ten minutes. With the same instructions, plus one: the safety trajectory when cornering, presented last September by the gendarmerie. Bad news for applicants: a minimum of 21 points out of 27 will have to be validated to obtain the permit, compared to 17 currently.

Developments that “miss the point”

So many changes that cause mixed reactions from the professional side. "It starts with a good feeling, and the questions are not so badly done, judge Thierry Le Pallec (UNIC). But they are clearly not made by bikers. We miss out on the essentials ”. However, the manager sees an interest in this specific motorcycle code: “Quite a few people passed the motorcycle license so as not to lose the time limit for the code, but did not get on a two-wheeler until years later. "

The trainers are not against the new code, "even if it seems more like a way to charge 30 euros more than anything else," says Pascal Wolf. Still, "the problem is behavioral," said the host of the AFDM. He has long called for an examination which takes into account “the apprehension of the road”. Thierry Le Pallec abounds: “We are very concerned about the technical side of the training, but that does not teach you to behave well on the road. "And to recall that bikers are 23 times more likely to be killed than motorists:" No matter who is at fault, the biker is much more vulnerable than the others, and that is why we must teach him to avoid mistakes, his own like those of others on the road. "Pascal Wolf is more direct:" The event favors the most technical, but they are also the most "daredevil".
