The French Minister of Agriculture said Friday that France had "obtained" a maintenance of the current budget of the common agricultural policy (CAP) for the period 2021-2027, during the extraordinary summit on the EU budget still underway in Brussels Friday morning.

"We won the first battle, the Commission had made an intolerable proposal" of "370 billion euros" while EU spending on agriculture is "375 billion" over the current period, Didier said Guillaume on LCI. "The President of the Republic has already obtained the 375 billion," assured the minister.

"We want to go further"

“Today, we have a CAP budget which is at the level of what we spent in the previous mandate, it is a very great victory, but we want to go further because we cannot ask for transitions to farmers without giving them the means, ”said Didier Guillaume.

The agricultural component with the CAP represents the largest part of the budget of the European Union, currently under discussion at an extraordinary summit which opened on Thursday in Brussels and was due to resume on Friday after a night of negotiations.

No agreement has been concluded so far between the leaders on the multiannual budget and therefore on the CAP. “Nothing is done, no amount has been recorded. The CAP has been attacked by several countries. This is our priority, so we are fighting, "said a French diplomatic source.

"France's priority in the European budget is the CAP," also insisted Didier Guillaume, noting that there was "an urgent need to lower the tension" among French farmers.

Emmanuel Macron two days in Brussels

Emmanuel Macron "is in Brussels, he will spend two days, two nights, and maybe if the debates continue in Brussels, he will not be there tomorrow morning for the inauguration (of the Agricultural Fair) defend the CAP budget, ”warned Didier Guillaume. He urged the farmers not to disturb the show. "We have rarely seen organizers disrupt their own show, do not sabotage your most beautiful showcase of the year," urged the minister.
