First meeting of experts meeting to reinforce school disaster prevention Okawa small decision Miyagi Prefectural Board of Education February 5 20:48

Following the ruling of Okawa Elementary School in Ishinomaki, Miyagi Prefecture, where many children were killed in the tsunami of the Great East Japan Earthquake, the Prefectural Board of Education established a panel of experts to consider strengthening school disaster prevention measures. The first meeting was held on the 5th.

In the tsunami of the earthquake, a total of 84 children and teachers were killed.A 23-year-old bereaved family member over Okawa Elementary School filed a lawsuit in October last year that paid Ishinomaki and Miyagi prefectures over 1.4 billion yen. The court ruled, and the ruling admitting inadequate disaster prevention measures was finalized.

In response to this, the Prefectural Board of Education established a panel of experts to examine the disaster prevention measures of schools that had been promoted after the earthquake and to consider measures to strengthen the measures.

"At the first meeting held at the prefectural office on May 5, Fumihiko Imamura, Director of the International Research Institute for Disaster Sciences, Tohoku University, who was appointed chairman, said," The earthquake was a huge disaster with no experience in the past, and schools were severely damaged. I would like to discuss what disaster prevention education and countermeasures should be in response to the ruling of the court. "

Discussions were held after the report on disaster prevention education in the prefecture and the contents of the ruling were reported. One of the committee members lost his eldest daughter, a sixth-year student at Okawa Elementary School, and is currently the principal of a junior high school. Shinichiro Hiratsuka said, "I would like to engage in discussions from two perspectives: bereaved family members and teachers, and work on mechanisms and human resources to protect lives."

The meeting will be held about five times, and the contents of the examination will be compiled during the next fiscal year.
