  • The episode of heavy rain that lasted three days is now over on the Aude and the Pyrénées-Orientales where the time is right for cleaning and taking stock.
  • While twelve people died and four others disappeared in Spain, no victims are to be deplored in the two French departments.
  • In three days, the equivalent of a winter of precipitation (in the form of rain or snow at altitude) fell on certain reliefs of these two departments.

The Aude and the Pyrénées-Orientales heal their wounds after the storm Gloria. In three days, it fell the equivalent of a winter of precipitation (in the form of rain or snow at altitude) on certain reliefs of these two departments, placed Wednesday and (partly) Thursday in vigil red flood. This Friday, at 4 p.m., they remain on yellow watch (floods for the Aude, floods and avalanches for the Pyrenees-Orientales).

In the Pyrénées-Orientales, the volume of precipitation reached more than 350 mm in the Haut Vallespir and 300 mm on the Conflent du Canigou. The cumulative precipitation was also very important on the Vermeille coast, especially Tuesday, the start of this storm. In Perpignan, more than 150 mm of rain fell.

"The depression remains in the Mediterranean but these rains are no longer stationary"

In the Aude, which was affected from Wednesday, the cumulative amounts reached are of the order of 250 mm in the Corbières and the country of Sault and up to 300 mm locally.

“The episode of heavy rainfall is over in these two departments. But the depression remains in the Mediterranean and gives more or less lasting rains over the departments further east of Hérault, Gard, Bouches-du-Rhône, Var and also going up on the departments a little further north ”, explains to 20 Minutes Roland Mazurie, head of the Montpellier and Nîmes centers of Météo France. The risks of floods and submersion are nevertheless ruled out.

“These rains are not stationary as they were on Roussillon in particular. The totals are much lower now. But the disturbed weather until Saturday, even Sunday in the South of France remains linked to this Mediterranean depression, less and less intense it is true, "continues Roland Mazurie.

Return to normal on rivers

All rivers are now on the alert yellow or green and are tending to return to normal everywhere in these two departments. Storm Gloria caused a lot of damage, especially for farmers, but also mudslides in suburban areas or houses located near watercourses. No casualties were reported. Hundreds of preventive evacuations, especially near Agly, in the Pyrénées-Orientales, have undoubtedly helped to avoid the worst. In Spain, where the Gloria storm hit even more strongly than in France, the death toll rises to twelve dead and four missing.

Many secondary roads remain cut off from traffic. However, almost all of the main roads were reopened during the day on Friday. This was also the case of the railway line cut between Narbonne and Béziers due to the Aude which was likely to overflow and threatened the structure of the line. The worst was finally avoided. Traffic resumed normally. The only difficulties are linked to social movements.
