Gothenburg Film Festival is the largest film festival in the Nordic countries and over eleven days almost 400 films from 80 countries are shown.

This year's theme land is Brazil, a country whose film industry is under intense pressure from President Jair Bolsonaro. Has almost halved the support for the country's film institute and has kicked off the institute's former director.

"The Brazilian film is in deep crisis and is fundamentally threatened and has been there since President Bolsonaro took office and started a war on film art," says Jonas Holmberg.

Brazilian movie creative wave

Jonas Holmberg says that the Brazilian president has threatened to completely shut down the Brazilian film studio if they do not introduce ideological filters for which films may be made.

- Bolsonaro has a cultural outlook that wants the film to defend family values and pay tribute to Brazilian heroes, says Jonas Holmberg.

While the Brazilian film industry is under severe pressure, there have been several successful Brazilian films lately.

- The Brazilian film is really in a creative wave. Only in the last year has it completely exploded by fantastic films. These are the ones we take to the festival and want to show to the Swedish and Nordic audience, says Jonas Holmberg.
