  • Goya Awards 2020. The 179 film academics who decide the best film of the year in the Goya
  • Nominations During the war, 17 nominations; Pain and glory, 16

Spanish cinema lives its great night this Saturday. Malaga hosts the 34th edition of the Goya Awards, a gala that will be the third to be held outside of Madrid, after having passed through Barcelona and Seville. Like last year, actress and humorist Sílvia Abril and comedian, presenter and producer Andreu Buenafuente will present the ceremony.

AMENÁBAR-ALMODÓVAR DUEL

This year's is a special edition because the two most prominent Spanish directors of the current scene will be measured: Alejandro Amenábar , at the head of 'While the war lasts' ; and Pedro Almodóvar , with 'Pain and glory' . With 17 and 16 nominations respectively, they compete with each other for 14 statuettes, including Best Film, Best Direction and Best Original Screenplay.

Although the two directors have met twice more in the Goya, there has never been a duel between the two in as many categories as in this edition, and only in 2005 the two simultaneously opted for the award for Best Film.

On those two occasions the films directed by Amenábar were clearly imposed on those of the Manchego director. Of the prizes that disputed each other in the different categories, Amenábar won in six and Almodóvar only in one.

Regarding their work as directors, both have been awarded twice with the Goya for Best Director , although Amenábar won another award for Best New Director for 'Thesis' in 1997.

THE NOMINATES OF THIS YEAR

In addition to 'While the war lasts' and 'Pain and glory' , three more works compete for the Goya for Best Film. It is 'La trenche infinita' , by the Guipuzcoan directors Aitor Arregi, Jon Garaño and Jose Mari Goenaga; 'Outdoors' , by Benito Zambrano; and 'What burns (Or burns)' , by Oliver Laxe.

Among the five accumulate 57 nominations. Taking a look at previous editions, it is very common that the film that wins the Best Film Award has also been nominated for Best Direction and Best Original Screenplay . According to statistics, 'Weathering' would start with the greatest disadvantage by not having any of these two 'talisman nominations'.

WINNERS OF PREVIOUS EDITIONS

Since the first edition of the Goya Awards took place on March 17, 1987, 33 films have been awarded the Best Film Award. The film that premiered this award was 'The Journey to Nowhere' , directed by Fernando Fernán Gómez , in the 1987 edition. The last Goya in this category went to Javier Fesser's 'Champions' in 2019.

'A Marábar', by Amenábar, swept in the 2005 ceremony by winning 14 of the 15 statuettes he opted for. No other tape, before or after, has managed to match this number of awards.

Historically, the winning films of the Best Film Award have had an average of 11 nominations . 'La soledad' , in 2008, challenged this rule by raising the statuette with only three nominations. On the opposite side, 'Days counted' arrived at the ceremony with 19 nominations.

At the box office, the winner with the most viewers in the year of its premiere was 'Los otros' , by Alejandro Amenábar , with 6,410,561 spectators. On the contrary, 'Living is easy with closed eyes' , by David Trueba , was the least popular among the public, with 105,262 spectators.

Pedro Almodóvar, Alejandro Amenábar and Fernando Trueba are the only directors who can boast of having directed three Goya winning works for Best Film , although none of the three have triumphed in this category for more than a decade. Now this triple tie can be undone if 'While the war lasts' or 'Pain and glory' end the night with the statuette.

Regarding the stars of the big screen, the most successful actresses are Carmen Maura and Verónica Forqué , with four Goya each. Penelope Cruz and Maribel Verdú are the most nominated actresses. Both were tied at 11 until Cruz's candidacy for 'Pain and Glory' was known for this year's edition.

As for them, the actor with more Goya is Javier Bardem , who has five. The most nominated actor is Antonio de la Torre . The Malaga has been a candidate 14 times, the vast majority in the last eight years. In four editions he attended the gala with two nominations under his arm. This year comes with one for his role in 'The Infinite Trench' .
