  • Nature: Everything you did not know about the Everglades, the largest tropical park in the US

It has become the 62nd national park in the United States for a few days. Located in the Tularosa basin, in the state of New Mexico , White Sands is one of the great natural wonders of the world: kilometers and kilometers of desert where the planet's most amazing dune field rises. And next to this, the fauna and flora that has managed to adapt to such a harsh and changing scenario. It seems unthinkable that more than 800 species of animals live in this desert.

Because the White Sands are in a "constant state of moving," as the US National Park Service notes. "The dunes grow, they curl up, after they collapse, but they always advance (more than 3 meters a year). Slowly but relentlessly, the sand covers everything in its extension, driven by the strong winds of the southwest."

To visit this park you must follow the Dune Trail . The Visitor Center, a historic adobe building, houses geological objects and a diorama that explains the formation of this protected area. Up to the heart of the dunes there are about 13 kilometers.

Some of the plants that have adapted to this ecosystem.

During the journey, there is no problem getting off the vehicle and venturing into the sand. In addition, if it is early in the morning it is possible to discover the traces of rodents, rabbits, foxes, coyotes, porcupines and other nocturnal animals. Of course, there is no water anywhere on the road and the sun is scorching, so you have to go prepared.

| How to get. The White Sands National Park is located in southern New Mexico, about 135 miles from the city of El Paso, in Texas, which is also the nearest airport. More information at www.nps.gov/whsa/index.htm
