Favorite quotation:

"I observe them all, these faces that I know so well. I was afraid with these people […] However, suddenly, I am a stranger among them. I became the subject. "

Why this book?

  • Because in this third novel by Fiona Barton, we find the journalist Kate Waters, whom we had already followed in the two previous novels of the author: La Veuve and La Coupure . But this time the investigation promises to be more intimate for her and risks upsetting her family's daily life. I found the character of Kate much more complete than in the other novels, and I appreciated her strength and her determination.
  • Because it is a breathtaking thriller, which begins with the disappearance of two young girls: Alex and Rosy left for Thailand as soon as their exams are finished, but the families are worried because they have been giving news for several days . Alerted by inspector Bob Sparkes, Kate decides to cover the investigation especially since her son Jake, is also in Thailand. The young man who excelled in his studies of rights, left everything overnight two years ago, in order to fly to Pukhet and treat turtles there.
  • Because the work of journalists is at the center of the story, with this need for scoop, exclusivity and competition between newspapers. The author also shows how journalists can be intrusive towards families, but also the close links they have with the police, the way they help each other and pass on the news.
  • Because the construction of the story is done through several characters. The passages from Kate, the mother of one of the girls, the inspector or even emails from Alex during his trip. The distress of the parents, the way the investigation is progressing, the way in which the ideal suspect is found, the way Kate conducts her research and the reality of the facts which gently reveals to us what happened in Bangkok are very well described .

This book was read with. The author does not follow the twists and turns, the investigation is slow and meticulous, certain things are obvious from the start, but yet I was not bored during my reading. I was really caught in this novel and impatient to know the outcome.
