Malaria is rampant in Madagascar. Two children under the age of ten died from the disease in early January in the Betroka district, the daily Midi-Madagaskara reported on Tuesday. They suffered from fever and convulsions.

The situation worries the health authorities since nearly 69% of the screened population has been diagnosed as carrying this parasitosis. An awareness campaign is underway: it encourages the population to go to care centers. Antimalarial inputs have also been made more accessible, adds the media.

The region has become an epidemic center

A representative of a Basic Health Center (CSB) explained to Midi-Madagaskara that the local population tends to move late in medical facilities to be screened. "It takes about five days after the first symptoms appear before people come," he explains daily. "They prefer, first of all, to consult traditional healers," he added. They practice unconventional medicine.

Intensive mosquito control is underway in this district, reports the media. Betroka has become an epidemic focus of the disease. Last year 600 cases of malaria were detected per week.
