Thomas Guy and Benjamin Voisin from "A real man" by Benjamin Parent - Ad Vitam

  • In "A real man", a lonely teenager struggles to adapt to his new high school.
  • The specter of his deceased older brother tries to guide him to push him to assert himself.
  • Gradually, the young hero must find his own conception of manhood.

"How do you build your identity when you are a boy?" What man do we want to be and, moreover, what is it, to be a man today? "Wonders Benjamin Parent, director of A real man . His film about a lost kid gives some answers.

A shy teenager (played by Thomas Guy seen in L'Heure de la sortie ) is trying to find his mark in a new high school. He will try to assert his personality, supported by the ghost of his older brother who died two years earlier (camped by Benjamin Voisin, noticed in the series Fiertés ). But what then are the codes to which the cadet must comply to become a "real man" without disappointing his parents interpreted by Isabelle Carré and Laurent Lucas?

Stay cool and relaxed

No question of externalizing his discomfort. The hero must hide his weaknesses from his comrades by only spawning with the dunces of his establishment. The ghost is there to order him to stay "cool and relaxed" in all circumstances and not to attend the "intellectuals" of the school. A perfect attitude to divert laughter when you are the victim of a cruel but dangerous joke when it involves putting yourself in danger or betraying the confidence of your loved ones.

Being a sports playboy

Sport puts you a man… And a girl too! If the specter is always there to advise his young brother who does not really shine on the basketball court, the presence of a pretty comrade (Tasnin Jamlaoui) turns out to be a powerful engine to improve his game. This meeting also allows the hero to wonder about his manhood and how he wishes to express it. He discovers that the naughty recommendations of his elder brother on the methods of seduction to be used to conquer her are not appropriate.

Become yourself

Of course, having a specter of your older brother as a counselor is helpful when you have to learn to dance, but your influence ends up becoming as toxic as it is cumbersome. Becoming a man is also - above all? - knowing how to take care of oneself without counting on this imaginary friend to make the right choices such as saying goodbye to a ghost who has become bulky. This is what the hero does, who ends up embracing life without worrying about the outdated recipes that his phantom brother wanted to impose on him.
