  • The heroes of "Underwater" attempt to rise to the surface after their underwater base has been destroyed.
  • Vincent Cassel and Kristen Stewart play disaster survivors who are faced with voracious creatures.
  • The actor finds a new original role in this horror film.

In William Eubank's Underwater , a group of scientists takes the plunge. An earthquake puts their drilling base at risk and they are forced to try to survive underwater by trying to rise to the surface.

Vincent Cassel plays the captain of a team in which we recognize Kristen Stewart and TJ Miller. This little horror film brings joyful thrills when confronting the heroes with creatures that are not really friendly. A good opportunity for 20 Minutes to find Vincent Cassel.

Why did you agree to shoot in this film?

I had never shot in an American horror film and I had never been given the role of a father figure like that of the hero I play. These two elements appealed to me. I like the idea of varying the pleasures, that the spectators wonder what I am doing there. I feel like I'm rediscovering my job this way.

Was it complicated to shoot underwater?

In fact, I was almost never in the water except in the morning in my shower! We filmed dry, everything was created in postproduction and I was the first surprised by the result! The creatures chasing us really look amazing. My 9 year old daughter loved it when I took her to the movie.

Was she delighted to see her papa being chased by monsters?

In fact, I don't think she cares about me. I was like her once when I was dragged to see films with my father Jean-Pierre Cassel. I sometimes got bored and wondered why he wasn't playing roles like Tarzan or Batman. Underwater is a film that can please my children, make them proud of me.

How was your collaboration with Kristen Stewart?

She is a huge actress and a wonderful girl who does not have her tongue in her pocket. But being an international star like her is not always easy. It is under pressure from an American system which can be very heavy when you depend on it. Although we are not of the same generation, we got along well.

Wouldn't she be the real heroine of the film?

It was time we gave these types of roles to women. I am used to seeing women dominate me because I am the father of three girls! However, I refuse the dictates of political correctness: if someone seems to me to say something stupid, I react in the same way whatever its genre.

Do you see one or all of your daughters becoming actresses?

I don't push them, although it's a nice way to make a living when you love this job. I warn my children that you must not be fooled: the acting profession is to make appear extraordinary what is not. You have to constantly question yourself.

Did the success of "Les Misérables" remind you of that of "La Haine"?

I am neither nostalgic nor backward looking! I am just proud of Ladj Ly whom I have supported since its inception and whom I consider to be a brother. His journey proves that everything is possible when you show your willpower and work. I loved.
