Audrey57, contributor to the reading group "20 Minutes Books", recommends Le petit boy qui wanted to be Mary Poppins by Alejandro Palomas, published on January 2, 2020 by Editions du Cherche Midi.

His favorite quote:

"You have to sing the magic word of Mary Poppins a lot of times without making a mistake [...] and everything will work out, because otherwise ..."

Why this book?

  • Because Guille is a special child, a dreamy and playful boy. He likes to sing, dance and spend time with his neighbor Nazia. He doesn't dream of being a footballer or a singer, he just wants to be Mary Poppins and be able to sing the magic word: "supercalifragilisticexpialidocious". He lives alone with his father, his mother is a flight attendant in Dubai. Unlike her father, Guille is smiling, generous, happy, even too happy! A behavior that alerts Sonia, her teacher.
  • Because each chapter is told through the voice of a different character. And each point of view on the daily life of the boy and his father allows us to better understand the difficulty they have to live together, the difficulty for this father to understand his son with his particular desires or how Guille experiences the absence of his mother.
  • Because the magic and the poetry of this text are just fabulous. Difficult to explain it further without spoiling the content of the story. The author has managed to extract from his text a multitude of feelings and I think that each reader can only be touched and upset. Guille is an intelligent and endearing boy. Strong and fragile at the same time. Courageous and terrorized by what he saw. The writing is soft, full of poetry, humor despite the melancholy and sadness.
  • Because this novel reveals an unforgettable story. A modern tale that will enchant you!
