A soldier in his twenties died on Thursday in Isère in an avalanche during which another soldier was seriously injured, according to mountain rescue. The two victims were found on the surface of an avalanche of several hundred meters, said the platoon of high mountain gendarmerie (PGHM) of Isère, confirming information from the Dauphiné Libéré .

The flow occurred Thursday afternoon at 2,400 meters above sea level in a corridor in the Belledonne massif while the two men, based in Varces south of Grenoble, were skiing off-piste.

A relative of one of the two victims, worried about being unable to reach her, alerted the emergency services. The first, a young man belonging to the 7th Battalion of Alpine Hunters (7th BCA), could not be revived. He died on the spot. As for the second soldier, from the 93rd mountain artillery regiment, also in his twenties, he was treated with multiple trauma by the emergency services and was transported to the Grenoble University Hospital. Both were not sent on site as part of their duties.

An investigation, entrusted to the PGHM of Isère, was opened to determine the circumstances of the tragedy.
