Galina Volchek, People's Artist of the USSR, artistic director of the Sovremennik Theater, died in Moscow at the age of 86. Previously, she was hospitalized in one of the capital's clinics with bilateral pneumonia. Volchek, along with Oleg Efremov and Oleg Tabakov, was one of the founders of Sovremennik. Among her directorial works are the performances Three Comrades, Pygmalion, Three Sisters and The Cherry Orchard. She combined work in the theater with filming in a movie: Volchek's filmography includes about 30 film projects, among which are “Watch Out for the Car” and “Autumn Marathon”. Galina Volchek is a full holder of the Order for Merit to the Fatherland, laureate of the International Stanislavsky Prize and Hero of Labor of the Russian Federation.
