Allee Willis, who composed the hit song for the American comedy series Friends, has died at age 72, her companion Prudence Fenton announced on Wednesday .

"Rest at Boogie Wonderland, November 10, 1974 - December 24, 2019," Fenton wrote on his Instagram account , along with a photo of Willis, in reference to the 1979 hit he co-wrote for the Earth, Wind and Fire group.

The capture of an article about his death was published in the Instagram account of Willis, along with the legend: "We are extremely surprised and devastated to share this news."

The composer died Tuesday of a "cardiac event," according to The New York Times, citing her publicist.

Willis, who wrote I'll Be There For You - the hit song from the famous comedy series Friends - as well as several songs for Earth, Wind and Fire, was enrolled in the Composers Hall of Fame in 2018.

In 1985 he won a Grammy for his work on the soundtrack of Beverly Hills Cop (translated in Spain as Superdertective in Hollywood) and was nominated for another two decades later by that of the movie The Purple Color, according to the Academy website of recording.

Willis didn't know how to play instruments, but he learned to compose by listening to the melodies that crossed the walls of Motown Studios in Detroit, the city he grew up in, the Times explains .
