It has taken many years ( 846 to be exact ) to unveil the authorship of one of the most famous towers in the world and the most visited in all of Italy: that of Pisa, located in the region of Tuscany. The architect who built it in the twelfth century was Bonnano Pisano , but when he saw that it was crooked he was ashamed of it and did not want to sign it.

The construction of the bell tower of the cathedral of Pisa began in August 1173, but soon began to sink by rising on a soft and wet ground. Pisano could not bear that his work had such a tare, which he considered a personal failure, so he did not want it to relate to his name.

A new find

Therefore, he decided to get rid of a stone in which it was indicated that he was the author and not that he was buried there, as previously believed. That rock has now appeared in the immediate vicinity of the monument and it has been Giulia Ammannati , a researcher of Paleography at the Superior School of Pisa, who has revealed the mystery.

The famous Italian Tower of Pisa.

In the inscription you can read Bonanus civis Pisanus together with a fundamental term half erased, opus (work in Latin), which means that the creator was Pisanus, not that he was buried there, as was believed. According to the scientist, Pisano himself was responsible for such inscription, but feeling ashamed of his work he preferred to get rid of it.

Not surprisingly, the works begun in 1173 were paralyzed to see how the building was tilted and did not resume until a century later, when Pisano was already dead. Even so, Giorgo Vasari, an Italian architect of the 16th century, already said at the time that the creator of the iconic bell tower was Pisano, but your theory was never accepted. Now, the revelation of the finding adds up so that the tower, which has seen its inclination reduced by four centimeters in recent decades thanks to conservation work, remains the most visited in Italy.
