A large number of ancient documents such as books and certificates of samurai from the early Edo period were found under the bran painting of a temple in Toyota City, Aichi Prefecture. There are documents such as the “Bonus Payment Details” that are now used, and they are attracting attention as valuable materials that show the samurai's financial situation and lifestyle at that time.

The old document was found at Ishiyasu Tokugawa, the boss of Morinatsu Watanabe's Bodaiji Temple, in Morizuna-ji in Toyota City.

During the restoration work of eight bran paintings called "Pine and bird drawings", allegedly drawn by a Kano school painter in the main hall, over 2,300 pieces of ancient documents were found from underlaying.

When these ancient documents were examined by Professor Eiji Otsuka of Aichi Prefectural University, which is studying the history of the early modern era, the oldest one was from the early Edo era of 1636, and used paper such as books and certificates for sale. Is considered to have been reused as bran underlining.

There is a document such as a statement that the “bonus” was paid in December as “settlement fee and nose paper fee”. It can be seen that about 7,800,000 yen was paid.

Professor Otsuka says, "It is a valuable document that gives a concrete indication of the samurai's lifestyle at that time."
