The rabbit has been listed as an endangered species for the first time by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Therefore, WWF asks the Ministry for Ecological Transition (MITECO) and the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPAMA) to develop a Working Group that addresses this situation.

The environmental organization considers the mountain rabbit as a key species of the Mediterranean ecosystem. In addition, it demands that an Iberian management strategy be drafted and that an Iberian census of this species be implemented, since it is usually a common prey for animals such as the Iberian lynx or the imperial eagle .

According to WWF data, the rabbit has reaped a decline close to 70% in recent years. The main cause that highlights the organization are diseases, such as myxomatosis or viral hemorrhagic disease , since the late 80's, with very high mortalities that reach 90%.

However, changes in the soil and intensive agriculture have changed the structure of the landscape and have eliminated the mosaic habitats on which this animal depends.

It is also bad news for Iberian predators, since almost 40 species depend on rabbits to feed. In fact, WWF believes that the descent of rabbits can be an "insurmountable" obstacle to the recovery of threatened species, such as the Iberian lynx and the imperial eagle.

Finally, the environmental group recalls that in 2016 it made a proposal for the management of the species, which was agreed with different hunting, agricultural and environmental associations but was stopped by the central administration, and for the moment, it has not been reached discuss with the autonomous communities.
