Lust for food may be one of our weaknesses, and it may be closely related to our moods, so we consciously or unconsciously lead to psychological emptying through food, as if food or fridge, so to speak, are our friend at the time of trouble. Hence the term "emotional eating" as an expression of this situation.

Emotional eating is eating too much to relieve negative emotions. Hence, it is a strategy to counteract non-coping. If the person is constantly eating emotional food, he will be more seriously affected by eating disorders such as: irritable insomnia and loss of appetite.

Research has shown that having an eating disorder increases emotional eating intake, it is important for clinical psychologists and nutritionists to know the signs of emotional eating and provide treatment to individuals given the relationship between serious eating disorders and emotional eating behavior. Since emotional eating is used to manage negative emotions, treatment requires learning more effective coping strategies.

For her part, Dr. Helen McCarthy of Bristol explained in her book "How to Restore Your Appetite" and called it Emotional Eating. Our emotions produce neurochemical changes in our bodies and minds, and we use the substance or activity that we have learned to be inconsistent with negative feelings.

According to a British newspaper, "Daily Mail", emotional eating means eating food in response to emotional states and not as a result of the body's need for food. To combat the negative emotional response, we are going to address substances that oppose these negative emotions as linked by our minds such as chocolate, fat food, or the like. It goes without saying that if we resort to food to calm emotional pain and succeed in it, then it is possible that we will repeat this process again, due to the learning mechanism and linking the act with a reward, either feeling happy or relieving pain, which reinforces the behavior, and increases the possibility of its recurrence.

On the other hand, McCarthy mentioned in her book that women are more likely to fall victim to emotional eating, because "ovarian hormones" are associated with emotional eating, when when the hormones progesterone and estradiol are at their peak, it is more likely that women will resort to emotional eating.

The researcher stressed that the first step is to know the link between negative emotions, go to the refrigerator, and try to separate them, by searching for other habits that distract you from food, and it is better to link combating negative emotions with exercising a certain activity such as running, skydiving, walking, laughing with friends, because it produces Neurochemical changes also produce hormones in greater proportions than those that are eaten by the body.
