The United Nations celebrates Sunday, December 8, the 70th anniversary of UNRWA, the agency dedicated to Palestinian refugees. Since its inception in 1949, this UN program has provided social assistance and services to millions of Palestinian refugees in the Middle East.

Active in Lebanon, Jordan, Syria, but also in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, UNRWA has developed schools and hospitals and now cares for five million refugees.

As the number of Palestinian refugees continues to grow, the agency is currently experiencing the worst financial crisis in its history. A situation in particular due to the cessation of financial aid from the United States - previously the largest donor - since 2018. This decision follows the recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel by Donald Trump in 2017.
