Vartanyan was born on January 25, 1926 in the city of Leninakan (Gyumri) in Armenia. In the early 1930s, she and her family moved to live in Iran.

At the age of 16, she joined the antifascist group of her future husband - Gevork Vartanyan. Together they conducted active intelligence work in difficult conditions.

Including in 1943, Vartanyan as part of the group participated in ensuring the security of the Tehran Conference, when an attempted assassination attempt by the Hitler special services on Joseph Stalin, Franklin Roosevelt and Winston Churchill was prevented.

Vartanyan was awarded the orders of the Red Banner, World War II degree and medals.
