In Wakayama Prefecture, where the harvest of mandarin oranges is the highest in Japan for 15 consecutive years, we have been working on “Strictly Selected Shipments” to select and ship mandarin oranges with a high sugar content from four years ago in order to increase the product value.
The work was also at its peak in Hirokawa Town, and after checking the mandarin orange's scratches and color, the sugar content was measured with an optical sensor and the ones that met the standards were boxed.
For carefully selected shipments, the standard of sugar content is determined for each period, and this month, only those with 11 degrees or more are selected.
According to the prefecture, last year the average unit price of tangerines per kilometer in the main wholesale market was 267 yen, nearly 40% higher than before the start of carefully selected shipments.
