More than 100 protesters may have been killed in the protests sparked in Iran against rising gas prices, Amnesty International said on Tuesday. The organization denounces the use of "lethal force" against "peaceful" gatherings.

"At least 106 protesters in 21 cities have been killed, according to credible reports," the human rights NGO said in a statement. "The actual toll could be much higher, with information suggesting up to 200 (people) killed".

A spokesman for the Iranian judiciary had previously said the situation had returned to normal after several days of protest.
