The protesters, demanding the resignation of President Sebastián Piñera, had gathered outside Chile's National Library on Friday.

Thousands, countless of them with a guitar in hand, sang and played Víctor Jaras's song "El derecho de vivir en paz" ("The Right to Live in Peace") in a tribute to the protest singer murdered by militants from the dictator Augusto Pinochet's army in 1973.

In total, around one million people are estimated to attend the demonstrations in Santiago, Chile.
