Applause, cheers and a cautious voice greeting: "Good evening - this is a song from our first record, most people do not recognize it". This is how the first track begins on Nirvana's iconic MTV Unplugged album from 1994.

The concert was recorded in Sony music studios in New York in November 1993 - just six months before Cobain's death. The acoustic gig was shown on MTV just a month later and released as an album the following year.

Stains and branding

At the front of the stage sits Kurt Cobain, wearing bright jeans, a white t-shirt with the punk band Frightwig and a gray-green acrylic cardigan.

It has not been washed since the 1990s, has visible stains and also a burn hole caused by a cigarette. And now it has been sold for $ 334,000.

There are, of course, shared opinions about what is an iconic garment, but according to Darren Julien, manager of the auction house who sold the sweater, there is no doubt about its status.

- I call it the holy grail of Kurt Cobain because it is the most important garment he ever wore.

"Kurt created the grunge look, he didn't wear stage clothes," said Darren Julien before the auction.

Even more expensive guitar

The cardigan was one of two Cobain properties that were now auctioned off 25 years after his death. In addition to the sweater, the blue guitar he used during Nirvana's In Utero tour was also sold for $ 340,000.

What Kurt Cobain himself had thought that his property is now being auctioned off for millions, we will never know. But he himself was not completely unaware of the idea of acquiring iconic memorabilia.

Just before the last song on the MTV Unplugged gig, a cover of "Where did you sleep last night" popularized by blues musician Leadbelly, Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic says that Kurt Cobain wants to buy Leadbelly's guitar, which was for sale for $ 500,000.

"I have even asked David Geffen (managing director, editor) personally if he can buy it for me, but he refused," Kurt Cobain said.
