A bride was killed along with three members of her family while taking a selfie on a dam in India, the country's police said, with the highest number of fatal accidents during self-portraits.

The group of six people taking pictures on the Bambaro Dam in the state of Tamil Nadu (south), according to a source from the local police.

"They were taking self-portraits when they slipped and fell into the water. The groom who was filming them did not fall with them and survived," the source said.

The latter jumped into the water and rescued one of the women, while the others drowned. Among the victims was a 14-year-old pupil.

Last year, 259 people died around the world during selfies between 2011 and 2017.

India has the highest number of deaths, followed by Russia, the United States and Pakistan.
