INTERVIEW

"What is the difference between God and a surgeon? God never took himself for a surgeon": this is how surgeons are often described, reminds the microphone of Europe 1, in No appointment , Éric Cheysson , surgeon for more than 30 years and president of the association Chain of Hope. Invited on the occasion of the publication of his book The arrogance of the scalpel (editions Hugo Doc), he points out the lack of control in the surgical world: whatever the age or state of health of the surgeon, the one It can exercise without any fear of being sanctioned.

"Airplane pilots are subject to annual exams"

"We often compare the surgeons with the pilots of plane because, in terms of stress and responsibility, it is comparable", explains the author at the microphone of Mélanie Gomez. "The difference is that pilots are subject to annual reviews and major overhauls every five years, and the surgeons have their degree at age 32 or 33, and then there is no control." The surgeon calls for a modification of the rule: "It would require a control of the visual acuity, the ability to operate, to see if the surgeon is not exposed like many others to health problems", he says. "Especially when you have such a heavy responsibility and such a duty of result towards the patient."
