New tools and specialized professionals for excellent journalism. That is the philosophy of the Master of Journalism of Research, Data and Visualization of EL MUNDO and the Rey Juan Carlos University , which is also a pioneer in Spain in these areas. And, for this reason, in the VIII edition of the Master, two fundamental platforms and equipment will be incorporated in the world of research and data: Datadista and Maldito Dato.

Datadista is a medium specialized in research, data, transparency and new narratives founded by Antonio Delgado and Ana Tudela. And Maldito Dato is part of the Maldita.es platform, which has been the precursor of verification journalism in Spain and was created five years ago by journalists Clara Jiménez and Julio Montes. Currently, it is the journalist Nacho Calle, former student of the second edition of the Master, who directs this section.

The inauguration of the VIII edition will be on October 28 and will be carried out by Marianela Balbi, a leading investigative journalist, director of the Press and Society Institute of Venezuela (IPYS) and nominated for the 2019 Gabo Awards. Balbi will discuss the situation of investigative journalism in your country, of pressures on the media both the Caribbean country and Latin America and, in addition, will give a workshop for new students. Registration for the Master is still open and there is a scholarship bag.

The Master in Research, Data and Visualization Journalism, a forerunner in Spain of these subjects, is directed by the journalist Antonio Rubio, president of the Association of Investigative Journalists (API), and has a prestigious teaching staff. Among its members are Mar Cabra, Marcos García Rey, Tomás Ocaña, Nacho Calle and Daniele Grasso - awarded a Pulitzer Prize for their work in the investigation of the Panama Papers. Ocaña also has three Emmy awards. Grasso, former student of the first promotion of the Master and creator of the Data Unit of El Confidencial and currently in El País, or Xaquín González Veira, visual journalist, winner of a Pulitzer Prize and nominated for several Emmy Awards.

A 70% placement rate

This outstanding staff of professionals provides our students with training that allows them to apply for jobs inside and outside Spain. In fact, the placement rate among those who have completed the Master's degree exceeds 70%, a ratio that has been maintained even in the latest promotions of the program. And this year will add more value to your training with the signing of Datadista and Maldito Dato.

Nacho Calle, coordinator of Maldito Dato, will be in charge of training the new students of the Master in information verification . Calle was a student of the second edition of the Master in the 2013/2014 academic year, did his internship in El Mundo and then, in 2015, he joined LaSexta, where the first Data unit of a television in Spain was created. And today it is one of the pillars of Maldita.es

Calle recalls his formative years: "Beyond technical training, the most important thing this postgraduate has given me has been to learn to apply a methodology to my work, to develop collaborative and long-term research." And with this methodology "we have verified the campaign acts of the candidates for the different elections and the monitoring of the electoral results has allowed us to offer different contents and extract stories from those databases with which we have worked".

Since its birth in 2016, Datadista has achieved an important recognition thanks to research such as Burbuja Beach, on the origin and consequences of the real estate bubble in the Mediterranean peninsular coast, collected in a book of the same name; or the #LosDatosHablan project for RTVE during the April 2019 General Elections.

Earlier this year, Datadista launched Hiperia, a research project management platform based on requests for access to public information that

guides users between the complex rules of transparency and the most useful jurisprudence in case of denial.

Delgado is one of the pioneers and promoters of data journalism in Spain and is responsible for the implementation of specialized data and innovation teams in Vocento, El Español or Weblogs. And Tudela is an economic research specialist and professor of accounting research and transparency. She has worked in media such as El Economista , Público , El Español and was head of content for Forbes Spain.
