The plenary session of the Royal Spanish Academy (RAE) has unanimously agreed on the constitution of the National Academy of Judeo-Spanish (Ladino) in Israel as the corresponding of the RAE, which is the culmination of a very relevant process for historical, linguistic and cultural reasons .

The creation of the National Academy of Judeo-Spanish was approved in February 2018 and will now be constituted in Israel as the corresponding institution of the SAR , the institution reported Friday.

That first agreement was ratified by the direction of the SAR and the corresponding academics of Israel: Shmuel Refael Vivante, Aldina Quintana, Eleazar Gutwirth, Moisés Orfali, Ora R. Schwarzwald, Jacob Luis Bentolila, Ruth Viviana Fine and Moshe Shaul .

From this moment on, the National Academy of Judeo-Spanish in Israel will be able to begin its journey, elect its members, their positions and request entry into the Association of Spanish Language Academies that integrates 27 institutions .

The director of the SAR, Santiago Muñoz Machado, has transferred his "warm congratulations" to the corresponding academic partners in Israel.

Judeo-Spanish is the language spoken by the descendants of the Jews expelled from Spain in 1492 by the Catholic Monarchs and since then they have used the exiles, known as Serfardis.
