Austrian billionaire Ferdinand Piotch, 82, a former head of the Volkswagen Group, the world's richest man, has died with a fortune estimated at $ 38 billion.

Media sources said the Austrian billionaire was having dinner with his wife at a luxury restaurant in Bavaria, Germany, before he suddenly fell unconscious and died and was taken to hospital in a desperate attempt to help him.

The Austrian billionaire is a key partner in the Volkswagen and Porsche car groups and was on vacation in Upper Bavaria where he suddenly collapsed in the restaurant.

He began his career as a mechanical engineer at Porsche and later converted to Audi and was credited with developing Mercedes engines.
