In the broadcast, Bolsonaro, who himself called himself "proudly homophobic", called support for LGBTQ films "wasted money". He also pointed out several projects that he thought should not be funded.

Brazil is now freezing funding for some 80 film projects, a fraction of which have LGBT-oriented content, while the country's film support committee will be reviewed.

- The first project he pointed out was ours, and in such a derogatory way, says filmmaker Emerson Maranhao to the Thomson Reuters Foundation.

Maranhao's planned documentary on transgender people in northeastern Brazil is one of the films that will now be unsupported.

- He damages 80 projects just to get to ours, that's scary, he says.
