German authorities demolished a concrete cooling tower at a nuclear power plant in the Mülheim-Kerliche region on the banks of the Rhine near the southwestern city of Frankfurt.

Mülheim Kerlisch nuclear power plant began producing electricity in 1988, and after 13 months of operation it was decided to be decommissioned by a federal court that found the risks of earthquakes in the region were not sufficiently taken into account.

The remote-controlled excavators today removed the pillars that support the tower at the nuclear plant. The upper half of the tower was then removed by a specially designed robot. Which spread over a vast area and its impact remained in the air for hours.

The radioactive material was permanently removed from the plant before the gradual demolition of the plant's buildings and reservoirs began in 2004.
