France's state health watchdog said LED lights can permanently damage the retina and disrupt normal sleep rhythms.

The French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety (ANSES) warned that strong LEDs are "toxic to look".

A 400-page report warned that LED light could cause irreversible loss of retinal and blind cells and advised maximum exposure to "blue light" LEDs to be set at much higher volumes.

However, LED screens, tablet PCs and laptop monitors do not pose a danger to the eye, except for the dense bulbs used in the headlights of the car.

The report also identified severe exposure to high-intensity LED light and "chronic exposure" to less intense sources. "Chronic exposure is less serious, but it" accelerates the aging of the web tissue "and contributes to poor vision, the agency said.

Energy-saving, low-cost LED technology has dominated half of the overall lighting market for 10 years and industry experts expect its share to continue rising, to over 60 per cent by the end of next year.
